EC Whole Food Nutrition:

Our gut health is the topic this week. I find this fascinating that our dopamine, serotonin, and immune system is dependent on the health of our gut. Cranial Nerve 10 which is a nerve that doesn’t even go through the spinal cord goes directly to our heart and gut directly from our head. This cranial nerve is an emotional pathway to and from the heart & gut. This is fascinating! This gives new meaning to phrases such as, "Have an open heart" and put on "Bowels of mercy". An unhealthy gut can lead to depression, anxiety and poor immune system to name a few A healthy gut is worthy to pursue so let’s scratch the surface.

Most Serotonin is curiously found outside our central nervous system. It is estimated that 90% is produced in the intestinal mucosa by cells called enterochromaffin, which interact with our microbiome, the ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses that live in our intestines. Yes, not all of these critters are bad.

It has been shown that the type of microbiota, which is largely dependent on our diet, can stimulate serotonin production to a greater or lesser extent, and that serotonin influences the nervous system via the vagus nerve (Cranial Nerve X or 10). It is also related to constipation, nausea or diarrhea, symptoms that often have a lot to do with emotions.

When the microbiota is disturbed, the intestinal wall becomes inflamed and serotonin production is disturbed.

The role of micro-organisms living in the gut and their links to diet, nutrient absorption, immunity, mood and overall health is increasingly recognized (along with our immune system & nutritional absorption).

That is why taking care of our gut health is also taking care of our emotional health. There is a whole system of information exchange between the brain and the gut where serotonin and microbial flora are fundamental.
